What has taken so long for VoIP to reach the mainstream?
VOIP technology has been around for quite some time, but consumer level products and services have not reached mainstream. There are a couple of significant reasons for this:
Quality of connection, or poor audio, has been a problem for cost-saving VOIP equipment.
Recent advances in VOIP technology have made this much less of an issue. Now, costs have dropped while quality has reached new peaks.
Ease of use has been very lacking.
Any new technology brings a host of new problems. Overcoming issues relating to consumers' ease of use generally takes time. Manufacturers and developers have now had the necessary time to make this a smoother technology experience.
