VOIP Network Architecture
Network problems can have a significant impact on voice applications such as VOIP. Take the time to measure network delay and packet loss before integrating a voice system to set a benchmark. Even after you’ve installed the right VOIP application, you should monitor the transmissions to measure the impact to your entire network.
IP data applications can handle network problems much better than voice applications. Even if your network architecture is vastly different, there are a few industry benchmarks you can use to evaluate the impact of VOIP:
- delay should be under 150 milliseconds
- overall loss should be below 1%
- maximum jitter of 40 milliseconds
